The Calm and Chaos of a Newborn Session with Siblings
Newborn sessions are always a little unpredictable (in the best way!). Add in an older sibling, and things get even more fun. You never quite know what’s going to happen - and that’s exactly why I love a newborn and sibling photoshoot so much.
This particular session took place on a warm July day in Essex with a two-week-old baby girl and her newly promoted big brother. The plan? To keep things relaxed and natural, capturing all those little moments that make this stage so special - the tiny newborn scrunches, proud brother cuddles, and those sweet new “family of four” vibes.

Solo Sleepy Newborn Photos
We started with baby girl on her own for those classic sleepy shots on the bed. She took a little while to settle, so there was plenty of gentle shushing and swaying while mum and dad relaxed nearby. Once she drifted off, she was a dream.
I kept things simple - soft light, minimal props, and a calm setup so we could focus on all her tiny details.

When Big Brother Stole the Show
Once we had the solo newborn shots, it was time to bring in big brother - and let’s just say, he arrived ready for action! Full of energy, big smiles, and very enthusiastic cuddles.

We started with some calmer moments on the bed to ease him in before moving into the living room so he could move (and jump!) around a bit more. That’s one of my favourite things about newborn photography with siblings - you never quite know what you’ll get, and that’s what makes it so real.

The mix of spaces gave us such a great variety - some polished, some completely candid. My favourite newborn and sibling photo ideas from this session? Quiet snuggles on the bed, playful tickles on the sofa, and that final moment by the bay window. The light was gorgeous, and seeing her tucked safely in his arms while he beamed with pride... those photos ended up being some of my absolute favourites.
Preparing Siblings for a Newborn Photoshoot
Older siblings bring such brilliant energy to a newborn session - but yes, they often steal the show! I always keep sessions flexible and fun so little ones feel part of things, rather than being asked to “behave.”
Beforehand, I chat with parents about what the older child enjoys. Are they hands-on? A ball of energy? A little shy? Knowing this helps me plan small moments that feel natural. Whether that’s cuddling their baby sibling, peeking into the basket, or proudly showing off their favourite toy.
There’s always time for breaks, play, and a bit of silliness too. When siblings feel relaxed and included, that’s when we get the real magic - those genuine, tender moments that show off their new role as big brother or sister.
Family Portraits to Finish
We wrapped things up with a few relaxed family portraits. Nothing too posed - just those in-between moments that capture connection and warmth. The kind of photos that take you right back to that hazy, love-filled newborn bubble.
The whole session was relaxed, natural, and perfectly imperfect - just the way it should be.
