The Christmas holidays are creeping up again - fairy lights, mince pies, and the familiar panic of finding an outfit that makes everyone look festive but not like they’re auditioning for a Christmas ad. Whether you’ve booked a family shoot or you’re just planning to snap some photos by the tree at home, a little outfit planning can make all the difference.
This post is packed with Christmas photoshoot outfit ideas, styling inspiration for families and siblings, and a few easy photo tips to help you get those relaxed, natural shots you’ll actually want to print (and maybe even gift).
What to Wear for Your Family Christmas Photoshoot
Here’s the golden rule: wear what makes you feel comfortable. Think something cosy, warm, and fabulous. You’ll be moving around during Christmas tree family photos, so if you’re comfortable, you’ll look relaxed and natural on camera.
My personal favourites? Creams and brown tones, jazzed up with a little (or a lot of!) sparkle. They create a timeless look that pops beautifully against the deep green of the trees. It’s the kind of combo that always photographs well - festive, but not over the top.

Photographers would usually say to steer clear of bold patterns, but Christmas is the exception! A festive tartan can look incredible for Christmas tree family photos. It’s such a fun way to bring personality into your photos without stealing the spotlight from your faces.
If tartan isn’t your thing, no worries - these ideas are just inspiration to help if you’re feeling stuck. The real magic in your photos will always come from your family looking and feeling like you.
Preparing for cooler weather
Skip the big coats (unless it’s absolutely freezing, of course) and opt for layers and textures to keep you warm. They not only look more interesting in photos but also prepare you for any type of weather. Think lighter jackets, cardigans, jumpers, hats and scarves that match your colour scheme. Plus they’ve got the added benefit of being easy to remove or add between shots.
Co-ordinating for that festive vibe
Finally, aim for coordination, not matching. Avoid everyone wearing completely different palettes, but don’t stress about being identical either. A few shared tones or textures will keep your photos feeling connected, cohesive, and effortlessly festive — exactly what you want from your Christmas session.
Outfit Ideas for Every Family Combo
Family Photos by the Tree
For family photos, aim for colours that work together rather than match exactly. Think of it as “coordinated without the clones.” For example: Mum in a cream jumper dress, Dad in forest green, and the kids in shades of tan or plaid. It’s cohesive, classic, and not too formal.
Sibling-Only Photos
If it’s Christmas sibling photos, keep it simple and playful. Overalls, jumpers, cord trousers, or little dresses with tights always look great. Add a touch of festive colour with a bow, beanie, or socks.
Letting kids pick one accessory (a hat or scarf) can make them feel involved — and you’ll get those genuine smiles we all love.

Capturing Natural, Candid Moments
Forget stiff poses - the best shots are the in-between moments: laughing, cuddling, maybe even chasing each other around the tree. Those are the natural Christmas photos that feel most like you.
A few quick tips for keeping things relaxed:
Play, don’t pose. Games, tickles, or dancing to Christmas music work wonders.
Stay comfy. Layers keep everyone warm and happy, especially outdoors.
Don’t stress about perfection. A flyaway hair or muddy boots? Totally fine. It’s real life, and it photographs beautifully.
Creative Ways to Use Your Christmas Photos
Once you’ve got your photos, don’t let them live in your camera roll until next year. Here are a few Christmas photo tips for using them:
Christmas cards: Classic and easy - everyone loves a personal touch.
Gifts for family: Grandparents adore framed prints or photo calendars.
Home décor: Add a few festive frames or prints around the house.
Social posts: Share your favourites with a short story about the day or a funny outtake.
